Lean Management, Lean principle and Lean Framework

LEAN MANAGEMENT In recent years, lean has become a powerful management philosophy that many of the companies have adopted but only few have actually achieved. This is because lean management is an ever ending journey and most of the companies have diverted their resources somewhere else after achieving lean (Trent, 2008). During his research with companies and cases, Trent found out that almost all the previous work in lean is towards manufacturing firms and the operations within manufacturing and explains that the managers should realize that lean practices goes beyond organizations to supply chain (Trent, 2009). Also researchers such as Sandelands (1994) and Avery (2003) asserted the importance of lean supply strategy outside the manufacturing firms. Lean is defined as ‘the systematic removal of waste by all members of the organization from all areas of the values stream’ where value stream mapping is mapping and analysing the activities in the processes (Womack and Jone...

Lesson 1 A man is getting into the shower just as his wife is finishing up her shower, when the doorbell rings. The wife quickly wraps herself in a towel and runs downstairs. When she opens the door, there stands Bob, the next-door neighbour. Before she says a word, Bob says, 'I'll give you $800 to drop that towel.' After thinking for a moment, the woman drops her towel and stands naked in front of Bob, after a few seconds, Bob hands her $800 and leaves. The woman wraps back up in the towel and goes back upstairs. When she gets to the bathroom, her husband asks, 'Who was that?' 'It was Bob the next door neighbour,' she replies. 'Great,' the husband says, 'did he say anything about the $800 he owes me?' Moral of the story If you share critical information pertaining to credit and risk with your shareholders in time, you may be in a position to prevent avoidable exposure. ...

Change Management - an example

Every organisation needs change in order to survive in the long run. Change always occurs in the organisation because change is essential. (Fay and Luhrmann, 2004) The process of change is complicated and can have a great effect on the employees of an organisation. Change has to be managed and controlled. It leads the organisation to improve their effectiveness. (Hayes, 2007) The leader must have the ability to identify, analyze and develop the firm’s capacity for change which is one of the most important and difficult aspects of change. (Judge and Douglas, 2009) One of the common definition for change management is ’a set of processes that is employed to ensure that significant changes are implemented in an orderly, controlled and systematic fashion to effect organizational change.’ (techFAQ, n.d.) Virgin Group

The Virgin Group At the age of 16, Richard Branson set up the student magazine. From the beginning his strategy was to identify the subjects that were neglected and not touched by well established companies and this gave him the competitive advantage (Pryce, 2009). In 1970, a mail order record was his new venture from where Virgin was founded. From that time on, he expanded virgin group into travel and tourism, mobile, leisure, mobile, finance etc and created a great empire – Virgin Empire consisting of more than 200 companies in more than 30 countries (Virgin, n.d. e). Branson has invested on companies with long term capital growth or which achieves long term value creation and feels this as the best approach for private companies (Pryce, 2009). Even when there were barriers in the virgin group journey, such as 1972-82 recessions, 1990-91 Persian Gulf War, Branson did not fall back. He continually expended the group into areas which were dominated by the big companies while select...

1.0 INTRODUCTION 1.1 CULTURE Culture has become one of the main areas of discussion in an organisation but there is no agreement on appropriate definition of culture. Culture may be understood as ‘The way we do things around here’ or ‘the way we think about things around here’ (Williams et al ., 1994). Culture comprise of at least four sub concepts: values, beliefs, norms and symbols (Jepperson and Swidler, 1994). Culture is a multi faceted concept and it is difficult to tell which components are most important for understanding organisation performance (Detert et al. , 2003 ). 1.2 ORGANISATION CULTURE ‘The collection of traditions, values, policies, beliefs, and attitudes that constitute a pervasive context for everything we do and think in an organisation’ (Mclean and Marshall, 1993 cited in Mullins, 2002). Organisations can have a culture if it has been a stable group for some period of time (Schein, 1988). Schein (1988) suggested three level of organisation ...
