E-library
Help Nepal Network (HeNN) aims in
providing support for rural areas of the country in health and education sector
(Help Nepal Network, n.d. a). HeNN
initiated a project to establish one electronic library for every district of
Nepal. This included computer facilities that would be used not only by the
students and teachers but also the local communities. 15 of the e-libraries
have already been deployed in different districts including some of the rural
ones (Help Nepal Network, n.d. b). FOSS Nepal volunteers have been helping in
the set up of this project (FOSS Nepal Community, n.d. c).
This project uses Linux Terminal
Server Project (LTSP) in its implementation and uses F/LOSS. They all run on
GNU/Linux operating system which has made it possible to achieve a reliable and
secure network and has cut the cost to one forth compared to computer
laboratory that doesn’t use F/LOSS. This model is very favourable for rural
areas (Help Nepal Network, n.d. b). People in most of the rural area haven’t
even seen a computer before and this project has helped them to connect with
the technology. Students have found the e-library interesting and interactive
and the digital books have helped in the learning process and made it more fun
than the traditional approach. The teachers have also described the e-library
to be helpful to them. The community has also been blessed with the digital
book ‘doctor nabhayema’ (in English translated as ‘where there is no doctor ‘).
Most of the rural areas are away from the highway and takes hours or even days
to reach by foot. These areas are deprived and don't have any hospitals or
doctors. This book provides general information about the first aid and also
gives the traditional approach which could be applied in the treatment process
(Rauniyar, 2009).
In January of 2008, they had
successfully established a electronic library education training centre in
Dhulikhel with the help of FOSS Nepal and education training sector. The
objective of this training centre was to train the teachers with the help for
ICT for educational development (Help Nepal Network, n.d. d).
