GNU/Linux

GNU/Linux Operating system opened a wider window of opportunity to the ICT and has came a long way from its origin.  GNU/Linux became popular and widely accepted in the past decade (Gillen et al., 2008; Gillen, 2009). This system came along with some of the preferred features than its competitors and gained most of the market. It came with variety of cost and support options giving the organisations more option to choose from. The GNU/Linux related software, hardware and support had more than 21 billion dollar revenue in 2007 and this figure is expected to be more than double by 2011 (Gillen et al., 2008). It has been a fastest growing operating system in almost every category of computing. It is growing fast in enterprise level too mostly because it is the way to control cost (Zemlin, n.d.). GNU/Linux is one of the most technically powerful operating system. It supports more than 20 different hardware architectures and has also been known for its high performance computing (Lyons, 2005).

Table GNU/Linux used by world top 500 supercomputers (TOP500.Org, 2010).

As a result of this most of the top supercomputers in the world prefer and use GNU/Linux. www.top500.org keeps track of top 500 supercomputers in the world. In the mid of 2005, the statistics showed that more than 60% of those top 500 supercomputers were using GNU/Linux operating system and in the end of 2010 more than 80% of those supercomputers was powered by Gnu/Linux.  Table 1 above shows the statistics of world top 500 supercomputers preferring GNU/Linux over years. GNU/Linux was used by only one of the top 500 supercomputer in 1998 but by 2004 it gained more than 55% of the share. In November 2010, 410 out of top 500 supercomputers of the world were using GNU/Linux (TOP500.Org, 2010).

Apache web server has played a significant role for GNU/Linux to grow beyond the world of computer programmer. It was a must-have technology and became popular between the web servers. Apache was more reliable, more flexible and more extensible than the other proprietary software available.  It did what the web masters actually needed it to do. Apache web server runs best on GNU/Linux and FreeBSD than Microsoft Windows or other operating system, so the internet service providers (ISP) and e-commerce companies preferred GNU/Linux system (Revolution OS, 2002).
